WHILe some of us have been basking in temperatures around the 20 degree mark over the past week, a Leitholm man has just returned from the European Fly Fishing Championships in Portugal where he was competing in temperatures up to 35.

But the heat clearly didn’t get to Keith Renton as as well as finishing second top scorer in the Scottish team he also helped the squad to a top 10 finish at the event held up in the mountains of Pennecara near Porto.

It was Keith’s first European Championships and only his second cap for his country so speaking to ‘The Berwickshire News’ earlier this week he was understandably thrilled with how he got on.

“Being in waders up to your chest and loaded with fishing tackle in 35 degree heat wasn’t exactly ideal,” he said.

“But it was a very exciting experiencesand I’m really pleased with how I did.

“Getting to be in the Scotland team gave chance to fish and test my skills against the very best fly-fishing anglers from all over Europe. The championships were fished the Mondego, Alva and Ceira all very different in size and very challenging.

“I had a great time over in Portugal. Where the championships were held was away from all the popular tourist spots and it was fascinating to see people working the land mostly by hand.

“We were made to feel very welcome over there and I met some great guys.”

The European Championships were won by Spain with the Czech Republic finishing runners up and Italy third.
