Chirnside Boxing Club coach set to hang up gloves
CHIRNSIDE ABC coach Michael Black will be boxing in his final amateur contest at the Dundee show on Sunday, before hanging up his gloves.
Following a points win against Mark Cunneen at the Dunfermline ABC show at the weekend, when Black split the judges to come out on top with a three to two decision, he will put in his last competitive rounds at Dundee against Paul Kean of the home club.
He said: “It will be my last amateur boxing contest because the age limit for amateur boxing is 35 in Scotland, which I will be in June. It’s time for me to retire and concentrate on coaching, but I’ll still enjoy some sparring with the lads at the club!”
Black was the last boxer to represent Chirnside before the original club closed in January 2000. In 2008 he was one of the driving forces in re-establishing the club, which became affiliated to Amateur Boxing Scotland again in 2010.
Also on the bill at the Dundee ABC Show, which will be presided over by Sky TV Ring announcer Craig Stephen, is Chirnside ABC junior member Lewis Noon in a rematch with William Stuart of Byron ABC.
Noon will be looking to set the record straight after he was narrowly defeated by Stuart at the Byron show last month.
Fellow junior member Ben Grant was in action on the Alloa ABC on Friday in a rematch against the home club’s Brandon Brown, after Brown came out on top when the pair met in the Scottish Championsips.
Grant put in a courageous and energetic performance, but lost out on points in a very entertaining fight.
Black said: “It was a great bout between Ben Grant and Brandon Brow on the Alloa ABC show bout between two good boxers. They are both warriors in the ring, and good friends out of it, which shows true sportsmanship.”
Both Grant and Noon also fought on the Millenium ABC show in Portpatrick at the end of April. Grant beat Josh Byrne of Dennistoun McNair ABC, and Noon overcame the home club’s Adam Greenhill.
“Both lads were superb,” said club coach and corner man Martin Wood.
