Callum and Keira win Borders schools titles
EARLSTON High School was the venue for the 2013 Border Primary Schools Badminton Championships 2013.
With 54 boys, 29 girls representing 19 different border schools and loads of parents and family supporters, the hall was full to capacity.
Entries were put into 12 boys’ pools and seven girls’ pools. Unfortunately, the boys had to use a fifth court in the gymnasium to accommodate everyone as there is currently no facility in the Borders where everyone can play in the same hall.
The seedings proved to be spot on with a few surprises along the way when the third seeded boy and girl made it into the finals. Paul Goldie from Drumlanrig, Hawick, beat No 2 seed Dion Trafford (from Coldingham) and Iona Fox from Kingsland Primary, Peebles, beat No 2 seed Jodie Black (Coldingham) who has been nursing an injured shoulder now for over four weeks.
The No 1 seeds cruised through the semi-finals beating No 4 seeds Ninian Grant (Gordon) and Kirsten Rodwell (West Linton) to reach the final.
Eventual winners were Callum Smith and Keira Waddell both from Duns Primary.
As well as going on to represent the Borders and their school at the Scottish Schools Championships in Perth in April these two young players will also be representing two different Scottish teams in Belgium at the end of March.
Thanks were extended to all the primary class and PE teachers as well as coaches who give up their free time to coach these young players from all around the region.
The next competition for primary age groups players will be at Duns on March 2 hosted by Duns Badminton Club. Coaches and interested parties are reminded that the Borders Badminton Group has meetings in the Buccleuch to organise adult and schools’ badminton and new members are very welcome. The group is aware that there are coaches out there who may need some support with equipment as well as coaching tips and support. The next meeting will be held on the Monday, March 19.
A small refreshment stall raisedn over £180 for the Border Badminton Group which stages both the secondary and primary championships for free.
Thanks also go to Roxburgh and Berwickshire sports councils forbn their financial support.
