Youngsters produce top class tennis at Gala

Berwickshire youngsters excelled at this year’s Borders Junior Tennis Tournament at the Borders Tennis Centre, Galashiels.

Fortunately, the weather was kind with only a couple of heavy drizzly short spells so play wasn’t held up at all. Play will resume today (August 15) for the 14 and under and 18 and under age group singles, doubles and mixed doubles.

Congratulations must go to all winners so far, especially Mini Tennis Green players Robyn Harvey (Duns) and Harris Brogan (Wilton Park and Hawick) who entered the 12 and under events for the first time and went on to win both without losing a set despite their younger age.

Spectators were privileged to see such great tennis from these younger players as well as the older ones. The 16 and under singles finals were especially hard-fought and memorable.

The standard of tennis generally was much improved on years ago and thanks must go to parents, coaches and all involved in encouraging these youngsters to play.

The Tournament Committee is grateful to The Borders Sport and Leisure Trust and the Borders Tennis Centre for the use of their facilities. However, this Committee desperately needs a few volunteers to help by putting in only a few hours a year, and the Borders Junior Management Committee needs Clubs to make sure they send a person along to their periodic meetings to help ensure that their youngsters’ interests can be best met locally.
