Tillside 1sts went down to their first defeat of the season in the Northumberland Premier League at Bates Cottages on Saturday.

With the outfield sodden at 1pm the players had to wait for an hour and a half before they could get under way which meant a reduced 35 over game.

Liam Hindmarsh used the pitch to great effect as he took 3 early wickets, one of them another fine slip catch by Wright, to reduce the home side to 30-3. Martin Golightly(38) with the returning Batson(33) then put 55 on for the 4th wicket as they looked to take the game away from Tillside. Alan Hindmarsh removed both in quick succession and with Cam McGregor also taking two quick wickets the Bates inningss fell away on a wicket that was always tricky for batting and finished on 129-9.

Tillside’s innings started the same as the home side as they lost 3 early wickets and they found scoring difficult from the outset.

Jake Birkett made double figures but he and Atkinson fell in quick succession as they slipped to 45-5. It was left to Stewart Wright to try and rescue the innings as he hit 41 in quick time. Liam Hindmarsh was the only other bat to reach double figures but when he became Waltons 3rd victim Tillside fell to 78-8.

Wright did his best to keep up with the run rate but when he was last man out caught on the boundary Tillside were 27 runs short.

The result means that Bates leapfrog Tillside into top spot in the table.

In the first division Berwick 2nds went down by 145 runs at home to Warkworth.

The visitors batted first and with openers Stephen Dargue and Scott Gibson hitting 21 boundaries between them as they posted 86 and 50 respectively a 99 first wicket stand had Berwick on the ropes.

Michael Sewell then weighed in with 39 as Warkworth went on to make 228-6, with Mark Woodcock taking 3-59.

Berwick lostv early wickets and at 19-3 were struggling. Brian Simmons made 21, but they were all out for 83, with Martin Clark taking 5-16.

Tillside 2nds recorded a six wicket victory over Ulgham in Division 3 at Etal.

Ulgham batted first, but with Davy Robertson taking 5-25 off his ten overs, the visitors were all out for only 91 in the 36th over, with Bobby Dodds top scoring on 35. The only other decent contribution came from Shaun Land on 19.

In reply, Tillside openers Ronan Atkinson (22) and Keith Bickerton (34) made a solid start, and 16 from Dave Reay edged them closer to victory, which they managed to achieve on 92-4 in the 20th over.
