As part of the summer training programme at the weekend Kelso Youth Development Hockey squad, which covers the eastern side of the Borders (taking girls and boys S1-S6 from Eyemouth, Duns, Earlston and Kelso catchments) held a goalkeeping session as part of their training at The Berwickshire High School.

Five players aged between 13 and 16 benefited from the hour and half coaching from Struan Scobbie from Edinburgh. Struan plays for Boroughmuir High School was the East District’s U18 goalkeeper. He is involved with the East performance and Scotland training squads.

The session included learning how to warm up correctly, kicking, running out and closing players down, angles and sliding. Towards the end the girls were given the chance to put these skills into practice within a training drill. They were worn out but had a good time and came away with new skills and more confidence.

Struan has given the girls feedback on what they need to work on. He has also stated that he would be happy to come and do another session with them at a later date.

KYDS is affiliated to Kelso Ladies Hockey club as this is the only club in the Eastern side of the Borders. They train at Berwickshire High currently on a Saturday 9.15-11am Cost £2. In August they will train one night a week at alternate venues. BHS one week and on the alternate weeks at both Earlston and Eyemouth. New players welcome.
