Simpson gets his season off to winning start

How about winning a club championship in your first race of the season, well that’s exactly what Graham Simpson did last Thursday evening.

After an early season out with knee problems Graham came back in fine style with a rapid 10 miler to take the first championship race of the year by just 11 seconds from new member Andy Waring, who also produced a personal best.

Graham’s 23min 27secs ride was just too good for Andy (23.38), who’d actually made it to the five-mile turn a second quicker than Graham. Steve Rowley took third in 23.56.

In the ladies race, Joyce Mark took yet another title in 26.14, Wanda Field was second, but getting closer, in 27.44 and Gill Caine took third in 29.39. Samuel Johnston took what may be the first of many juvenile titles with a 33.53. Joyce’s time was also enough to win the veterans standard with Doug Robinson 2nd and Andy Waring 3rd.

The race also doubled as the second round in the handicap time trial league. Chris Cowe took the maximum 10 points on the night with Andy Waring Second for nine and Graham Simpson third for eight points.

That leaves Doug Robertson leading the league on 16 by just two points from Steve Rowley and Chris in third on 10.

At the weekend Andrew Scorey took part in his first stage race near Dundee – a solid 11th place in the first stage, a hill climb. The afternoon stage, a 64-mile road race, saw Andrew getting into a number of breakaways.

Unfortunately the one breakaway he didn’t get into stayed away and he ended the day in 11th position overall.

The final stage incorporated four laps of a tough hilly circuit totalling 72 miles – Andrew was again in the lead group and finished 17th, which placed him an excellent 8th overall in the final standings.

This week club time trial is the first hilly race of the year – the riders tackle a 16 mile out and back route between Duns and Grantshouse. Riders meet at Duns old High School car park, 6.30 for a 7pm start.
