IT’s been a successful summer for Chirnside Bowling Club’s Sheila Douglas, not content with winning singles and doubles honours at a national event in Jersey, she has added another title to her name after winning the Women’s National Two Bowl Triples together with club mates Kay Purves and Helen Kenny.
The trio made the final of the competition in East Calder after seeing off Queens Park 10-1, 6-8, 3-2 in the semi final and started their bid for top honours last month only for the title-deciding tie against Bellshill and Mossend to be rained off.
Last weekend was the first time everyone was available to resume the final, meaning the Chirnside ladies had to wait nearly a month between winning the first set and making their final push for glory.
The match resumed with the Berwickshire ladies 2-1 up in the second set but some impressive bowling from their opponents led to the scores being equalled and a crucial third set.
Sheila, Kay and Helen got two shots at the first end and then Bellshill got two at the next.
The result of the match came down to Sheila’s last bowl and fortunately it was a good one, prompting much celebration at the bowling club when they returned home.
It was the first time the Chirnside trio had competed in the two bowl triple discipline and Sheila said they surprised themselves by how well they did. “We never expected to win going into the event and with us having the month wait after the final had been abandoned we just treated it as starting a new match,” she said.
