Scottish finals beckon for top bowlers

All roads led to Hawick on Sunday for Borders bowlers as the Bowls Scotland District Finals were played out at Hawick Bowling Club.

As usual the Scottish weather did not disappoint with beautiful sunny spells followed by some heavy rain showers with a bit of a strong wind thrown in as well.

There was a good crowd throughout and those people who braved the elements witnessed some great bowling and some really close games.

And there was a number of Berwickshire success stories through the day.

In the Gent’s Junior Singles Jamie Mitchell from Chirnside Bowling Club was on top form to defeat Abbotsford BC youngster Andrew Hancock 21-9 while in the Gents Singles Campbell McNeill from Eyemouth BC won through after defeating Tommy Newall of Abbotsford 21-12.

The Gents Senior Singles was a close affair with Berwick’s Gordon Case edging out Gordon McPherson of Wilton 21-18.

Comfortable winners of the Gents Senior Fours were the Chirnsde rink of Mick Morrison, Brydon Simpson, Dave Buglass and Dave Lugget. They defeated the Gala rink of Hugh Clifton, Angus Tait, Jim Craig, Rob Fulton 21-9.

Duns Park also have a team through after a very comfortable 23-4 victory the Mixed Pairs.

The brother and sister pairing of Ian and Val Angus defeated Paul McVie and Sandra Oliver from Ettrick Forest.

Having tasted national victory in the past Chirnside Bowling Club’s Ladies Four have a chance to win at Aye again after an outstanding 27-4 victory in their final.

The Chirnside rink of Helen Kenny, Veronica Cockburn, Kay Purves and Shiela Douglas defeated the Jedburgh rink of Margaret Gray, Anne Michie, Ann Gilfillan and Irene Watters. Helen Kenny also won through in the Ladies Senior Singles by virtue of a walkover.

All the winners will now go on to represent the Borders in the National finals at Ayr Northfield between July 23-28.
