Borders para-athlete Samantha Kinghorn has won two gold medals on her Great Britain debut at the IPC Athletics European Championships in Swansea.

The 18-year-old from Gordon, making her senior debut in the GB & NI vest, gave fans plenty to cheer about by claiming the team’s first gold medal in the T53 400m, before going on to repeat the feat in the T53 100m.

“You don’t know what to expect when you go out on the track so to win the gold is pretty awesome,” said the Borderer, who represented Scotland at the Commonwealth games in Glasgow last month.

“This year has been absolutely incredible and I’m over the moon to come away with two gold medals.

“I’ve spent a lot of time with the likes of Hannah (Cockroft) and all the big names are so down to earth even though they’re gold medallists. To see myself on that level is pretty scary.”

She added: “It’s great winning a gold medal in front of a home crowd and my family have travelled down from Scotland to see me race. It’s amazing.”

Kinghorn was favourite going into the T53 400m final, but was made to work hard for her victory in windy conditions.

“The wind was behind me so I got a fast start. The lactic started to burn half-way, but I managed to keep it going.”
