The fourth leg of the Borders Winter Cross Country Series was held at Chirnside on Sunday, and proved a suitable challenge for all the competitors.

Muddy conditions and a biting wind made it difficult for the 136 athletes in the senior race and the 80 who contested the junior event.

This was the first time the series had staged a round at Chirnside, hosted by Chirnside Chasers, and the organisers would like to thank all the marshals, timekeepers and volunteers who worked so hard and made the day a success. They would also like to thank Rob Cowe for the use of his fields.

In the seniors race Carnethy repeated their Lauder success with Andrew Fallas and Michael Reid taking the spoils in the men’s race (27.14 and 28.19 respectively) and Charlotte Morgan just pipping Gala Harriers’ Dianne Lauder to the post in the ladies’ race (29.39 and 29.52 respectively).

In the juniors race, it was Gala all the way with Gala Harriers’ Callum Thame winning the boys’ race in 13.16 and his teammate Susannah Godfrey-Faussett the girls’ in 14.19.

With most of the host club’s regular cross-country runners helping to organise and marshal the event it fell to Emma Jones, who finished the 4.2 mile course in 45 mins 26 secs and Zoe McInnes who finished in 44.43 to admirably represent the club seniors on the day. The juniors also had a fine showing with 23 of the 80 competitors wearing the distinctive Chirnside green and black vests.

First home for the juniors was Josh Abbott, finishing 4th overall in a time of 13.52, 2nd in his boys 12-13 yo category then Declan White 6th overall and 1st place in his Boys 16+ category.

The time results and category place for the other junior runners were as follows: Jamie Kinghorn 14.32 (3rd boys 12-13 yo), Harry Fuller 15.13 (5th boys 12-13 yo), Oliver Stewart 16.01 (3rd boys 10-11 yo), Oscar Tomlyn 16.05 (3rd boys 8-9 yo), Archie Fuller 16.39 (7th boys 10-11 yo), Charlie Jones 17.04 (6th boys 8-9 yo), Charlie Stewart 17.11 (8th boys 10-11 yo), Daniel Ross 17.34 (7th boys 8-9 yo), Kyle Taylor 17.54 (8th, boys 8-9 yo) Isla Taylor 18.09 (8th girls 10-11 yo), Ben Reynolds 18.16 (11th boys 12-13 yo), Jade Longstaff 18.31 (8th girls 12-13 yo) Zico Field 18.48 (11th boys 8-9 yo), Harris Ross 19.54 (12th boys 8-9 yo), Wilfred Tomlyn 20.37 (13th boys 8-9 yo), Keira McGregor 21.12 (5th girls 8-9 yo), Rachel Hudson 21.51 (14th girls 10-11 yo), Laura Fuller 22.52 (7th girls 8-9), Erin McInnes 23.32 (8th girls 8-9 yo), Morgan Burns 24.11 (9th girls 8-9 yo), Heather KInghorn 29.14 (16th girls 10-11 yo).

Thirteen TSRD (Tweed Striders RunDuns) members braved the icy wind to tackle the challenges of the Chirnside course with Christian Young being first to finish in 34.40 and 47th spot; Jane Holmes was the first TSRD lady home in 37.38. They were followed by Johnny McMurchie (37.52), James Blair (40.19), Doug Small (41.12), Mel Ellis (42.00), Colin Thompson (43.47), Julia Keddie (46.38), Pamela Toward (51.16), Deborah Bowden (53.26), Gill Brownlie (58.48), Nicola Foggon (59.37) and Jud Thompson (62.05).
