Rory storms to Great North Run victory

Rory Williams, aged 10 from Chirnside who beat over 200 runners winning the 9-10 year old boys 4km race at the Great North Run, with a time of 15mins 46secs.  Rory runs for Gala Harriers and trains with Henry Gray from Eyemouth, and also with Chirnside Chasers.

YOUNG Rory Williams from Chirnside, a member of Chirnside Chasers and Gala Harriers was in superb form at the weekend winning the prestigious Great North Junior Run over 4km in the 9-10 age category.

Rory took command of the race very early on and dominated from start to finish coming home almost 30 seconds clear in a very fast time of 15 min 46 sec.

His coaches Henry Gray and Steven and Leanne Ross were absolutely delighted as were his proud parents Alan and Nicola. What’s more two other runners from Chirnside also excelled in their categories.

Becci Couch finished in a fine ninth place in the 15-16 category and Jamie Kinghorn was also in the top 30 in the 9-10 category out of fields that exceeded well over 400 runners. This was a magnificent achievement from the three youngsters considering the population of the village.

Chirnside has produced many fine runners over the years including Brian Kelly, Graeme Wood, Billy and Tom Duff, Kris Stewart, Patrick Swan and it looks like the fine tradition is set to continue for many years to come.

Other runners to do well from the East Coast Track Club squad were Nathan Cox from Berwick who finished in a fine fourth place in the 13-14 age group category and narriowly missing out on the bronze medal, Joe Brown, Harry Fuller, Hannah Wilks, Andrew and Cara Hogg, and Colette Kaines and Marshall Smith.
