Perfect conditions to scull down Tweed

It’s been a number of years since Berwick has hosted a stage of the sculling series and this year the weather and conditions were close to perfect for the 50 boats racing against the clock.

There were quadruple, double and single scullers competing in various categories over the 5000+ metre course from West Ord to Berwick.

First boat over the finish line was a men’s IM1 quad scull from Chester Le Street in 23 minutes and eight seconds, winning fastest senior quad.

Fastest single sculler went to McCarron of Cambois in 25.07.

Berwick’s Robin Morrison and Chris Eke were the first double scull over the line in 25.54, but the category win went to Tyne ARC once the masters handicap was applied.

Fastest women’s boat overall down the course was Alison Inglis and Hilary Cairns in 26.57, followed by Gordon Benton and Ian Smith in 28.18.

Andrew Cairns finished second junior sculler in 29.54. It was more mileage under the belt for the new novice double Ewan Brewis and Ross Mason, completing the course in 31.04.

Fastest senior women’s sculler went to Elvira Drummond in 31.12. Lauren Adams and Emily Iles, competing together for the first time, finished in 31.45 with Alan Robertson closely behind in 32.08.

Berwick crew of the day was Sam Seaton, Shelley Aitchison, Julie Riley and Amy Faragher.

It was the first time Shelley and Julie have raced over such a long distance and they acquitted themselves very well, finishing with a creditable time of 33.12.
