Berwick had a Saturday evening fixture away to Newcastle University 4s and with temperatures well below freezing they were surprised the game was on.
The game didn’t start well for Berwick and although they had all the pressure for the first 15 minutes, they found themselves a goal down from a well struck penalty corner which was deflected in by one of their own defenders.
Berwick immediately picked up the pace, even though the pitch was very slippy.
Michelle Stewart weaved her way from the half way line though three home defenders and scored her first goal of the match.
Berwick went on the attack with another two goals in the first half. Linzi Hogg scored from a well worked penalty corner and Stewart got her second with a reverse stick strike from the top of the D .
With a quick turn around at half time it was Berwick who were put under pressure when the students won another penalty corner and again scored from a Berwick deflection.
The pitch was freezing up quickly but Berwick were hoping they would be allowed to finish the match and out of the two teams seemed to adjust quickest to the hard surface.
Becca Murray managed to get herself two goals in quick succession, the first when she followed up a shot from Stewart and a second when she helped another shot from Stewart over the line.
With the score at 6-2 and only 15 minutes remaining, Berwick bagged themselves another three goals.
Murray smashed the ball into the net to complete her hat trick, and not to be out done, Stewart netted a further two.
In a match where Berwick scored all 11 goals of their 9-2 win, and where the whole team played well after their long Christmas break, Berwick were happy with the result.
