With the curling at the Olympics now underway, two Border men have yet again tasted victory on the Scottish national stage.
Keith Prentice and Tommy Fleming on Sunday became Scottish Senior Champions for a record equaling fifth time and now go on to represent Scotland at the World Senior Championships.
The senior’s final was a repeat of the Edinburgh International final in November (which they also won), taking on Graeme Adam’s rink from Glasgow.
They had beaten team Adam in the earlier group stages, so they were determined to do the business again.
In the final, team Prentice were one shot down after the second end but managed to take three shots at the very next end. They stole a shot in the fourth end for a 4-1 half time lead, and then another steal in the fifth end stretched their advantage.
Team Adam managed to pick up a single in the sixth end, but when team Prentice took a two to go 7-2 up with just one end remaining, Graeme Adam conceded the game.
Qualification for the world seniors this season is extra special, as they are being held in Dumfries at the end of April.
They will be hoping to match their success of 2007, when they won the world title in Canada.
Prentice commented, “I’d like to thank my team who played so well throughout. We’re looking forward to (the World Senior Championships in) Dumfries because how many times do you get the chance to represent your own country, in your own country, it doesn’t happen a lot.”
Once again the team was starring in their Saltire trousers, which has now become something of a trade mark for them.
Keith and Tommy’s wives, Gwen and Rhona also took part in the ladies senior competition, but they couldn’t manage last year’s result by finishing runners up, having being knocked out in the group stages.
Back at the Border Ice Rink, their attention will turn to the league where they currently sit top of the standings.
With two rounds to play, these games will determine if they finish in the top two, which would mean they qualify for the National Super League finals next season – which they also won this season!
