National badminton titles for three Berwickshire youngsters

Three young Berwickshire badminton players were on top form on Saturday winning titles at the Scottish National Under 11 Championships held at the National Badminton Academy at Scotstoun in Glasgow.

In the girls’ singles second seed Jodie Black from Eyemouth defeated three seeds on the way to the title.

In the final she overcame top seed Hannah McGeehan (Gourock) 21-17 after beating joint third seed Rosie Sterk (Stonehaven) 21-15 in the semi-final and joint fifth seed Zazou Wycherley (Edinburgh) 21-13 in the quarters.

Top seed Jodie then completed a title double by taking the girls’ doubles with Jessica Robson from Lanark. In doing so she once again toppled both Sterk and McGeehan, beating the second seeds 21-18 in the final.

Jodie would like to take this opportunity to thank Border Sport and Leisure Trust and Rowan Boland Memorial Trust for their financial support this season.

In the boys singles, top seed Isaac Weir from Duns defeated fellow Duns player and joint third seed Callum Stokes 21-14 in the semi-final before overcoming joint third seed Tyler Smith from Greenlaw 21-15 in the final.

Tyler had the consolation of teaming up with Isaac as No.1 seeds to claim the doubles title, defeating Callum Stokes and substitute partner Lewis Hart (Motherwell) 23-21 in the semi-final before holding off the challenge of second seeds Joseph Carlyle and Ben Richmond (Edinburgh) 21-18 in the final, completing a title double for Isaac.

A fantastic achievement for these young Berwickshire players!
