Duns driver Euan Thorburn contested the Carlisle Stages at the weekend, hoping to notch the second victory of his BTRDA Championship campaign.

Once again at the wheel of the P&R Benn Amigos Beer Ford Focus WRC’02, with Richard Cooke alongside on the notes, Euan was determined to push on from the start and overcome the newer machinery of his opposition.

However, his problems started on the very first stage of the day, when the pair picked up a puncture three miles from the end of the seven mile stage, dropping almost a minute to the rest of the field. After changing the wheel at the end of the stage it was straight into SS2, 4.5 miles through ‘English Kershope’, where Euan and Richard would have to do something special to climb back up the leaderboard.

The fast stage was all going to plan until half a mile from the stage end they clipped a large boulder on a right-hander damaging the front right wheel resulting in a premature end to the day.

After a long wait in the forest until the stage was over, the team arrived and finally got the car out the stage and on its way home the P&R Benn garage to be repaired in time for the next rally.

Euan told the Berwickshire News: “I am really disappointed, not just for myself but for Richard, Paul Benn and our new sponsor Amigos Beer.

“I can only hope this is the bad luck out the way now and we get a result on the Nicky Grist Stages to keep our championship hopes alive. A massive thanks once again to Paul Benn, Amigos Beer, and to Richard for doing a great job on the notes.”

The next round of the BTRDA Rally Championship is the Nicky Grist Stages on July. The last time Euan competed on this rally was back in 2013 where he won the event and went on to win the championship that year.

Euan will also be back out soon at the wheel of his Fiesta with regular co-driver Paul Beaton, competing in the European Rally Championship, the Ypres Rally in Belgium.
