ATHLETICS: Guy Learmonth kept up his good run of form by being crowned Scottish national champion over 400 metres in a new personal best time.

The Berwick athlete won the one-lap title at the Scottish National Senior Championships at Scotstoun in Glasgow with consecutive personal best times in his two races. With an impressive run of 48.00 seconds in the final, the 20 year-old Loughborough University student even surprised himself by picking up the title.

Learmonth posted on Twitter: “Well, I didn’t think I’d be saying I was a national champion over 400 metres, but I am. It was ridiculously windy too. I’m now ready for the big one at the Bislett Games in Oslo on Thursday night.”

Learmonth scored a superb victory in the 800 metres at the Hyundai Grand Prix in Olso’s Bislett Stadium less than a fortnight, which will stand him in good stead for this week’s higher-standard event at the same venue.

The Great Britain team for this year’s European Championships will be selected on June 20, and Learmonth has already achieved the qualifying time for Helsinki. All he needs to concentrate on now is impressing the selectors.
