Local athlete Guy Learmonth continued his build-up to the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow when he ran in the European Trials in Birmingham at the weekend.

Learmonth, who comes from Berwick, finished in fifth place in the 800m in a race which was won by Olympic athlete Mike Rimmer.

Also in the race was Muktar Mohammed, the European indoor bronze medalist and Olympic finalist in London, who finished second.

Another experienced runner, Andrew Osagie was in third place.

Learmonth will now concentrate on his Commonwealth Games preparation which will be based in Portugal.

Coach Henry Gray said this week he may possibly also have one more race before he goes abroad if he is picked for the 800m in the Diamond League race in Glasgow next weekend.

Meanwhile, in the Border Games at Poynder Park in Kelso at the weekend, the Berwick Academy pairing of Nathan Cox and Cameron Tindle were both in the places.

Cox, who runs for Morpeth Harriers, started off a 10m handicap and finished third in the Open 600m, whilst sprinter Tindle, starting off -2m in the Youths 100m, finished second in the final.
