Chirnside Boxing Club’s James Walker was on top form at the weekend bringing home a gold medal from the Scottish Novice Championships held at Ravenscraig Sports Centre.

This is a fantastic achievement for the youngster from Reston who defeated Adam Merzouki from North Glasgow Boxing Club in the final of the 2004/2005 born 40kg Schoolboy category.

In the semi-final, James faced Joseph Popowicz from Logan Boxing Club and boxed well to win every round and take the bout by a unanimous points decision.

James’ twin brother Cameron was also competing in the championships.

Entered in the 2004/2005 born Schoolboy 48kg category, Cameron was drawn to box against Csab Szilagyi from Southside Boxing Club but was unfortunately defeated by a unanimous points decision.

Michael Gillon was to also scheduled to compete at Ravenecraig but he was forced to pull out of the event after injuring his hand boxing in the recent Cleland Show.

This weekend John Grant will be boxing at the Dunfermline Show on Friday night as will Thio Noon, younger brother of Lewis and David, both former boxers with the Chirnside club.

Thio will be boxing as a ‘Club Cub’ and this will be skills contest only.
