Berwick’s Guy Learmonth and Gordon’s Samantha Kinghorn both made it through their heats as athletics began at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Learmonth is back in action tonight in the semi-final of the 800m after qualifying as a fastest loser from his heat at Hampden Park.

The 21-year-old was fourth in 1:47.85, but with only the top three qualifying automatically he had an agonising wait before learning that he had made it through.

In fact, his heat was so quick that he is actually the fourth fastest qualifier for the semis overall.

Earlier in the day, Gordon wheelchair athlete Samantha Kinghorn qualified for Thursday night’s final of the T54 1,500m.

She was leading her heat before being overtaken on the last lap to finish third in 4.03.41.
