Berwick Speedway Supporters’ Club held their second Hall of Fame dinner in the Black and Gold on Saturday when five new inductees were unveiled.
Former riders Bruce Cribb and Graham Jones were both in attendance, along with ex-promoter Davie Fairbairn, and family and representatives of the late Wayne Brown and Ian Graham.
They followed on from the inductees at the first dinner last season - former captain’s Rob Grant and Alan Mogridge, and the Bandits’ founding Taylor family.
After the event. co-promoter Dennis McCleary praised the Bandits’ Supporters’ Club and the Bandits’ 2012 Group following an emotional year for the Berwick club, particularly in view of the injuries sustained by Ricky Ashworth in August.
At the dinner the Berwick club handed over a replica Ricky Ashworth No 1 Berwick race-jacket to the Supporters’ Club as they were joint sponsors of the special meeting in late September. A No 1 jacket (Sheffield) has gone to Ian Hunter of Sheffield Window Centre who were also main joint sponsors and one of each adorn Ricky’s Hospital Ward in Manchester.
McCleary commented: “Ricky could not get them up quick enough when we took them down before Christmas and it was great to see him continue to make progress”
Going back to the work of the Supporters he added, “ They put on a terrific show on Saturday, ably hosted by Dave Hoggart again. It was a sell out and plenty of Bandits faces from the past were in evidence too.
“The meeting in September, for Ricky netted over £15,000 and when you add the wrist band sales etc formulated by The 2012 Group it accrued over £30,000. Both the 2012 Group and Supporters’ Club should be proud of what they achieved overall”
Meanwhile, Berwick have confirmed their Press/Practice session will be held at Shielfield on Saturday, March 22 from 6.30pm and fans will be admitted as usual.
