As the new speedway season approaches, Berwick-based Liam Carr has revealed how he has obtained a new sponsorship deal . . . with a Somerset oil company.

Carr, who turns 20 this year, is lining up for his second spell of Premier League racing with his home-town Bandits, having previously started out the 2014 season in black and gold.

He recently revealed how he was investing over £4,000 in a new engine for 2016, which is being prepared by former rider and ex-Berwick track record holder Sean Wilson.

Now, he has won the backing of PRC Racing Lubricants, who this year have agreed to back three young British riders in their quest to climb the ladder.

“There will be me up here, Ellis Perks at Plymouth and the Isle of Wight and a guy called Martin Knuckey, who will be racing with me at Coventry Storm,” said Carr.

“We will obviously be using their oils and other products, and showing off the PRC logo on our kevlars and bikes.

“I’m really proud to have been invited by Anthony Madoleli of PRC to join this exclusive little team.”

Meanwhile, Anders Mellgren says he is looking forward to his first full season with the Bandits, having spent the last month of the 2015 campaign in the Borders.

“I’m really, really looking forward to it,” he said.

“There are new challenges to face, nice people and the team line-up looks pretty solid!”

Mellgren has been practising during the winter on frozen lakes near his home in Hagfors, Sweden

“Its good fun,” he said. “When I’m sliding on the lake I can try every single line possible, as there’s so much space”.

“I’m just a 24 year-old bloke from this little northern town called Hagfors, about the same population as Berwick, I think, trying to make it to the top in speedway”.

“I started on little bikes when I was six, then I won the 85cc title on the way up to 500cc machines. I just love racing, and I know I’m going to enjoy 2016.”

Carr and Mellgren will get theirn first taste of the Shielfield track when Berwick hold their press and practice on Saturday, March 19, followed by a ‘meet the riders’ session with fans in the Black and Gold Club.

The Bandits are also holding a meeting for all track staff in the Black and Gold on the afternoon of Sunday, February 28.
