Duns badminton player Eugene Stokes got 2016 off to a winning start by taking the gold medal in the Badminton England Yorkshire U15 Silver tournament.

Just playing in the singles, unseeded Eugene won his two pool matches in straight sets and progressed to the knockout stages. Both the first knockout round and quarter-final were also won in straight sets.

The semi-final against second seed, Joshua Mo, proved to be the most difficult challenge with Eugene coming through 12-15, 15-11, 15-8.

In the final Eugene cruised to victory 15-8, 15-8 against 5/8 seed, Archit Sachdeva.

This was a great start to 2016 for Eugene, an S3 pupil at Berwickshire High School, and he would like to thank Club Sport Berwickshire and the Russell Hogg Trust for the financial support received this season.
