Euan Thorburn wins Plains Rally for second year running

Duns rally driver Euan Thorburn was back on the winner’s rostrum in Wales on Saturday.

Driving his Ford Focus WRC, Euan, co-driven as usual by Paul Beaton from Inverness, won the latest round of the English-based REIS BTRDA Gold Star Rally Championship, the Plains Rally.

Despite setting the fastest time on six of the eight special stages, 2013 champions Euan and Paul just came out eight seconds ahead of the Subaru Imprezza WRC of Dave Weston Jnr and Jedburgh co-driver Dave Robson. This was actually the largest time gap during the whole day and these crews had been tied on the same time at the service halt.

This result sees four different event winners on the four rounds so far this year with more potential winners still in the mix. Amongst the retirement list were the Wyedean winners and current Scottish champions David Bogie and his Hawick co-driver Kevin Rae who suffered badly with punctures.

Euan, who also won the event last year, said: “We were delighted with the win as it was a very closely fought event, Dave was always close on our heels, particularly after we lost time of the third stage due to problems with the brakes. Other than that the car went well all day.”

Next up in just three weeks is the Rainworth Skoda Forest Rally (the Dukeries) on June 7, which is also a round of the MSA English Rally Championship, and hopefully we will be treated to another exciting contest.

However, before that Euan and Paul will of course have their ‘home’ event - the Jim Clark Rally on May 30-June 1.
