John Crawford scored a hat-trick as Coldstream beat Duns in the Berwickshire derby to extend their lead at the top of the East of Scotland First Division.

The Streamers talisman, back in the team after missing the previous week, put the home side ahead after 25 minutes by converting a Gary Wales cross, but Gary Waddell used his acceleration to slide home an equaliser five minutes later.

Crawford’s second came early in the second half courtesy of a mistake by Duns goalkeeper Scott Lumsden. He misjudged what should have been a routine clearance from the edge of his box, letting the ball run past him to present Crawford, who had gambled with a forward run, with the simple task of rolling into an empty net.

The captain’s hat-trick was complete five minutes later when he headed home a Wales corner from five yards.

That virtually killed it, and Coldstream then brought on new signing Kris O’Neil, recruited from Hawick Royal Albert during the week, for his debut.

Both goalkeepers made good saves before Duns gave themselves a lifeline fives minutes from time.

Bruce Chisholm’s right-foot shot was parried by Coldstream goalkeeper Mark Walters, and Duns substitute Ben Boucher reacted quickest to scramble the rebound over the line from four yards.

Ultimately, it was too little, too late.
