BERWICKSHIRE High School emerged victorious in the South Schools 2nd XI Hockey Tournament which was held at Tweedbank Sports Centre, Galashiels, on Saturday morning.

A total of six teams took part and competed in two sections. Pool A included Earlston, Kelso, Jedburgh, while the remaining teams Selkirk, Berwickshire High and Peebles contested Pool B.

Earlston and Jedburgh won through from Pool A while Berwickshire High and Selkirk won through from Pool B. These four teams then contested the semi-finals.

In the first semi-final Earlston played Selkirk with Selkirk winning a place in the final by virtue of two penalty strokes to one.

In the second semi-final The Berwickshire High School played Jedburgh and this game also ended up in a draw therefore penalty strokes decided who would go through to the final. Lyndsay Morris was the only Berwickshire High player to net a goal and with Jedburgh unable to score from the spot BHS won through.

Both BHS and Selkirk seemed to save their best hockey for the final as the play flowed from end to end. Some very entertaining hockey was displayed by both teams.

Four minutes from the end of the match Rachel Walker put BHS in front but her team had to fight hard to stay in front as Selkirk put them under a lot of pressure.

The final whistle was a welcome noise to BHS as they were the champions and well deserved winners.

Coach Julie Abbot was very pleased with her team’s effort and commitment as several of the team had played nursing injuries and some had just returned from illness to play in the tournament.

The Berwickshire High School team was: Jenny Thumwood, Emma Scott, Summer Middlemas, Sarah Lugget, Rachel Baxter, KIrsten Cove, Rachel Learmonth, Rebekah Armstong, Emma Finnie, Rachel Walker, Rebecca Brady, Chelsea Patterson, Natasha Birkett and Lyndsay Morris.

Coach - Julie Abbot, umpire - Moira Anderson.
