Berwickshire High School players dominate at Earlston

Berwickshire High School took nine of the 12 titles available at the Borders Secondary Schools Badminton Championships held at Earlston on Sunday

Kelso High took two of the titles and Peebles High took the last remaining title.

With more than 70 entries from eight of the region’s nine secondary schools it was always going to be a busy day of competition. The event began at 9.30am with the singles tournaments before moving on to the level doubles by lunch time and final matches being played late afternoon with a 5pm finish.

One of the event organisers Donna Waddell said:: “The Committee were strong in their presence which I think reflects how hard we are working to ensure that the group continues to go from strength to strength and ensure that badminton is promoted throughout the whole of the Borders for many more years to come.”

Christine Wylie, the groups chair person thanked tournament sponsors Kaimburn Joinery and Building Services and Harry Turnbull Ltd together with everyone who helped on the day to make the event run smoothly.

Results were as follows:

Under-18s - Fraser Young (KHS) beat David McLeish (PHS); Kirsty Millar (BHS) beat Catherine McQuarrie (EHS); David McLeish/Hamish McKenzie (PHS) beat Fraser Young/Dean Mathers (KHS); Kirsty Millar/Joanne Deuchar (BHS) - awarded title.

Under-16s - Euan Harvey (BHS) beat Sam Langley (BHS); Linsey Young (KHS) beat Leona Rhind (BHS); Sam Langley/Barnaby Bevan (BHS) beat Euan Harvey/Niall Richards (BHS); Keira Waddell/Leona Rhind (BHS) beat Jodie Black/Jodie Aitken (EyHS).

Under-14s - Eugene Stokes (BHS) beat Callum Smith (BHS); Keira Waddell beat Jodie Black; Callum Smith/Eugene Stokes beat Gareth Williams/Jamie Palmer (JGS); Molly MacDonald/Abbie Nicol (BHS) beat Iona Fox/Kirsten Rodwell (PHS).

The Borders Primary Schools Badminton Championships will be held on Saturday, February 14, at Earlston High School. Players must enter the competition through their schools and be affiliated to Badminton Scotland.
