BANDITS manager Ian Rae is confident new number one Ricky Ashworth will be fit to ride against Edinburgh Monarchs this weekend, despite needing medical attention on the track after a crash on Sunday night.

Ashworth went down heavily into the second bend fence in the first heat of Sunday night’s Tyne Tweed Trophy clash away to Newcastle Diamonds and remained on the track for medical attention. He missed the rest of the meeting with lower-back pain, but Rae is hopeful he will be fit to return at Shielfield this Saturday.

He said: “We have checked up on Ricky’s condition and we’re told he should be ok to race again, subject to x-rays, next weekend.”

Ashworth has made a blistering start to his Bandits career with five wins out of five in Friday’s League Cup defeat at Scunthorpe and another unbeaten showing against Newcastle Diamonds at Shielfield the following night.
