Local speedway rider Liam Carr faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines following a bad crash at Sheffield last Thursday.

Carr, who started out the season with the Bandits, only recently lost his place in the Berwick team following the return of Alex Edberg.

The Berwick-based teenager, who had also been riding for Buxton in the National League, guested for Sheffield in their home match against Redcar.

At first it was feared he had sustained a broken leg, but it was later diagnosed there were no broken bones, although he still suffered serious injuries with damage to the ligaments and tendons in his knee.

After a spell in hospital in Sheffield he was transferred to the Wansbeck in Ashington on Saturday and was due to undergo an operation on his knee earlier this week.

“It looks like Liam took a bad one,” said Berwick director George Hepburn. “His season is over, but he has lots of family and friends here atBerwick and we can only hope he makes a full recovery from his injuries.”
