Chirnside Boxing Club junior members packed a punch at the schoolboy championships, bringing two silver medals back to Berwickshire.
Robbie White and Bailee Noon won the silverware, with more Chirnside boxers making it through earlier rounds at the Ravenscraig Sports Complex in Motherwell.
Thirteen-year-old White, a pupil at Eyemouth High, boxed his way into the final of the 2000 born 36kg category with a fine performance, defeating John Bamford of Broadwood ABC by 13 points to 6 in the semi final.
White came out second best in the final, with Deveron Valley’s Alexander McCormack fighting his way to a 10-5 points win.
Berwick’s Bailee Noon (11) was also defeated in his semi final, losing out 8-4 to Harry Peacock from the Renfrewshire club in the 2001 born 34kg category, in a bout which was closer than the score suggests.
Bailee’s older brother, 15-year-old Lewis Noon was also in good form at the championships. He won his semi-final of the 1997 born 52kg category, against Leon Roberts of West Kilbride, by 10 points to 9. This put him through to the final against Craigmillar’s Joe Murray. Unfortunately Noon was defeated by 4 points to 2 in a close contest where both boxers waited for each other to attack so could hit on the counter.
Attacking action was limited making it a low key bout, but Noon felt he had done enough to win the contest.
Eyemouth’s Ben Grant (15) was defeated in his semi-final of the 1997 born 54kg contest, going out to a strong and very experienced opponent, Chris McCluskey of Newarthill.
Chirnside ABC chair Michael Black said: “Well done to the four boys for their efforts, two silver medals is a great achievement!”
