An Eyemouth athlete made her mark in the Abu Dhabi sprint triathlon, storming to a fine fifth place finish in her category.
Returning to top-class competition, former world age group triathlon and duathlon champion Joyce Mark was one of more than 1,500 athletes who braved sweltering 35 degree temperatures in the second Abu Dhabi International Triathlon earlier this month.
Mark, 52, completed the sprint tri, consisting of a 750-metre swim, 50km bike ride and 5km run, in an impressive time of just two hours, 19 minutes and 10 seconds. She finished 25th overall out of 179 competitors, and was the first female to cross the line in the 50-54 age group.
The race took place in full view of the splendid Emirates Palace Hotel, with a section of the course on the famous Formula One grand prix track. Fifty-one countries were represented, with Scotland’s top triathlete Catriona Morrison finishing a fine third in the elite women’s race to pick up $15,000 in prize money.
