DUNS rally driver Garry Pearson, 18, fresh from his success in last year’s Scottish Rally Championship where he was awarded an all expenses drive in a B13 Subaru Impreza sponsored by Revolution Wheels, belied his age to produce an excellent fourth-place result overall - first in his class - in last weekend’s Sunseeker National Rally, which was held in the Bournemouth area.
Garry, who was Scottish Junior Rally Championship runner-up last year in his 115 BHP Peugeot 205 GTI, had a giant step-up into the turbocharged four wheel drive category. The Impreza also runs an anti-lag system which was causing Garry problems with a couple of overshoots and a spin early on.
“Although I would eventually have been quicker if I had left the anti-lag system on I decided it would be safer with it switched off,” said Garry. “I only had the car for one rally to try and get used to it and we also had a large insurance premium excess intimidating us.”
The Subaru was running on normal petrol, 30 BHP down from the Carless Fuel it normally uses, and this was also Garry’s first rally with his new co-driver, Laura Marshall, 17, from Dumfries.
Their season starts in earnest on April 2 when they travel to mid-Wales to compete in the Stars of the Future British Rally Challenge.
