BERWICK RANGERS RES 1
All the goals came in the first half as Coldstream opened their Qualifying League campaign with this derby win.
The visitors went ahead in the 4th minute without touching the ball. Berwick’s Jonny Fairbairn attempted a back pass to Billy Bald but hit it too hard past the stranded keeper.
The next two arrived in a three minute first half burst. Josh Morris, from a ruck of players, headed in Kenny O’Brien’s free kick to level. In the other half, John Crawford wrongfooted Fairbairn. Coldstream’s captain made further ground before swinging a cross to the back post where Jonny Simpson flicked the ball home off his shin.
Coldstream switched to a 4-4-2 formation for this game and at times the Reserves were trying to break down a double line of defence. When they did get through, Lawrie Cannon cleared another Morris header off the line. Crawford did the same to a Ben Miller shot and the ball was quickly relayed downfield to Jonny Simpson. As he wound into the box, Scanlan tripped him. Crawford’s 38th minute penalty put the home side firmly in the driving seat.
Berwick enjoyed territory for the third quarter but too many crosses went begging. Yet, Walters in the Coldstream goal sometimes looked shaky and was thankful to palm away another Miller effort at full stretch.
Coldstream soaked up pressure and threatened in counters. Crawford had a chance to increase the margin but he screwed his shot wide. Even later, Morris missed one for Berwick sending the ball high over the bar with only Walters to beat.
