COLDSTREAM 1-3 EYEMOUTH UNITED: Steven Shennan scored twice to help Eyemouth United win the Berwickshire derby at Home Park and finish a good season on a high. Carl Hudson’s men were in the promotion hunt for most of the First Division campaign and finished in fourth place. Coldstream briefly threatened to enter the race for a Premier Division place too before falling away. This defeat means Andrew Gibson’s men dropped two places in the table on the final day to seventh.
The home side were not helped in this game by first-half injuries to their most experienced players - Phil Johnson and Paul Cowe. Both had to be replaced.
Eyemouth were missing several key men themselves, and it was one of the replacements drafted in from the amateurs who opened the scoring. Alan Spiers rose unmarked to head the visitors in front from a corner midway through the first half.
Coldstream goalkeeper Mark Walters then made a superb diving save to deny Steven Shennan, whose shot was destined for the top corner until it was diverted past the post for a corner.
Coldstream’s John Crawford missed a great chance to equalise in 65 minutes when Mitchell Simpson hit the byline and cut the ball back, but Crawford was off balance and screwed hit shot wide from four yards. It proved to be a turning point.
At the other end Shennan made it two from the penalty spot midway through the second half after Martyn Cornish brought down Jonny Simpson just inside the area. The Coldstream defender could have no complaints and Shennan sent Walters the wrong way from the spot.
With Coldstream pushing to pull one back, spaces were opening up for Eyemouth on the counter-attack. Josh Hebdon’s clever reverse pass released Shennan down the inside left channel to clip home the third past Walters.
Crawford skimmed the post before eventually pulling one back with his 43rd goal of the season, a crisp left-foot drive from 18 yards. But Eyemouth, by then, had alreadfy made the points safe.
