WOOLER 0, NEWCASTLE CHEMFICA 3

Wooler were second best in this Morthern Alliance League George Dobbins League Cup second round tie, struggling to contain the oppositions’ lively forwards.

During the first half Wooler were pegged back into their own half for long periods, but the defence were able to deal with most of the Chemfica attacks.

Wooler played with three centre halves and wing backs but the forwards struggled to retain possession and the visitors were able to play the ball out from the back and keep the home defence under pressure.

Wooler did create a couple of half chances but the visitors looked more likely to score.

In the second half Wooler defended even more deeply and the inevitable happened after 10 minutes when MacLaughlin broke through to score.

The pattern of the game was now set with Wooler desperately defending but unable to create scoring opportunities and Chemfica pressing forward.

MacLaughlin scored his second with 20 minutes to go and in the last five minutes Sherliker scored the visitors’ third goal.

This was a disappointing performance from Wooler and although the defence did their utmost to contain the opposition the relentless pressure eventually broke them down.

This weekend Wooler return to league duty with a first division game at home to Willington Quay Saints.

The Glendale side currently sit fourth in the table with Willington bottom, having only won one of eight games.
