After a late pitch inspection by referee Paul Hanlon, the match in the South Region Challenge Cup at Victoria Park went ahead.

The game started with both teams sounding each other out without any real penetration. But Vale started easing the pressure on forcing keeper Mutch and the Eyemouth defence to be on their toes.

Then it was Eyemouth’s turn to test Vale with good work from new signing Iyere and Jess, who fed in Buckley forcing a good save.

After a disallowed goal for Vale they eventually found the net. A good tackle from Eyemouth’s Walker fell to Vale’s Stevens, who made no mistake in slotting into the corner of the net.

But Eyemouth responded in the perfect way right on half time when Keith Buckley was found in the box and he slammed in the equaliser.

The second half began and the Fishermen were caught sleeping when a lovely cross found Slater who rose to head into bottom of the net. This stirred a fraction of life into Eyemouth and chances were created for Jess and Buckley but went abegging.

Vale’s Stevens got the goal of the game hitting a dipping shot from 25 yards leaving Mutch stranded and the same player went on to complete his hat-trick on 75 minutes when he was given the freedom of the Eyemouth box. Mitchell put the final nail in Eyemouth’s coffin on 90 minutes with the fourth.

Eyemouth: Mutch, Speirs (Wylie), McInnes, Ford, Walker (Adamson), Jess, Lauder, Wyman, Burrell, Iyere, Buckley (Scott).
