Leithb Athletic 1, Berwick Reserves 5

Berwick Reserves highlighted their status as promotion candidates as they hit top form in this match played at Spartans’ Ainslie Park complex.

Afterwards, Leith manager Derek Riddel admitted that the Reserves outplayed his team in every department and were lucky to be only 2-0 down at the break.

Those two goals came within two minutes of each other and both were scored by Josh Morris. The first was a penalty after Callum Wyllie was brought down. After Morris collected Ross Brady’s well judged pass, Leith goalie Iain Gordon ventured out of his area to confront him in a one to one situation but couldn’t prevent the striker sending the ball into the far corner of the net for number two.

Riddel made two changes of personnel at the break bringing on Stephen Barrie and Liam Jack for his debut and switched his men to a 4:3:3 formation in a bid to pep up his team’s attacking potential but the goals kept going Berwick’s way.

Only two minutes into the new half, Morris found Kenny O’Brien unmarked at the back post who made it 3-0. Three minutes later, Morris completed his hat-trick, cashing in on a mix up in the Leith defence to score from the edge of the box.

Reserves’ keeper Grant Sandison did not have a save to make until the 71st minute. Soon after, when a Leith free kick was blocked at the Berwick end, O’Brien sprinted upfield exchanging passes with Greig Smith before bagging his second goal.

On picking up a through ball from Chris Barrie, Stephen Barrie clipped the ball over Sandison ten minutes from time but this goal was of little comfort to the home side who have promotion ambitions of their own.

The Reserves next face the challenge of local rivals Duns at Shielfield this Saturday ( March 16th ), KO 2:30pm.

Berwick : Sandison, Finlayson (Saunderson 68), Brady, McLean, Fairbairn, Gill, Doris (Hay 80), Wyllie (Lough 60), Smith, Morris, O’Brien.
