BERWICK RESERVES 2, SPARTANS RESERVES 1
Maybe the gull feathers strewn over the pitch were to blame but a largely uneventful first half only briefly flickered into life around the 19th minute.
Spartans’ Bradley Raiker outpaced Ewan Saunderson down the left. His run ended with Billy Bald forced to save from Christopher Taylor. The resulting corner led to two more saves by the Berwick keeper. In between them, there was a suspicion of a Berwick handball but surprisingly, no penalty appeals from the visitors.
Berwick included Stephen Tulloch and Neil Janczyk. From the latter’s corner, James Elliot headed over the bar but Berwick rarely troubled goalkeeper Murray Jackson.
The Edinburgh team made the early running after the break and Michael Gray hit a superbly struck goal four minutes from time to give Spartans some hope.
The turning point was the 50th minute introduction of Dean Carse. Showing an appetite to take on defenders, his 67th minute pass out to Shaun Meikle was returned into the goal area where Carse nipped behind an unsuspecting rearguard to stab the ball home.
Robbie Laird headed away a Carse shot for another Janczyk corner which produced Jackson’s magnificent one-handed save from Elliot. However, though he dived the right way, he had no chance with Janczyk’s 81st minute free kick winner.
Berwick Rangers Reserves: Bald, Saunderson ( Carse 50 ), Gill, S.Tulloch, Bennett, Janczyk, Brady, Elliot ( Buckley 81 ), G.Tulloch, Finlayson, Meikle ( Anderson 68 )
