Chirnside travelled to Hawick to take on Waverley in the third round of the South Cup on Saturday.
The match was switched to Hawick United’s pitch as the Waverley pitch was unplayable due to the heavy rain and it was the home team who had the first chance of the game when Craig shot wide when clean through on goal.
Despite that early scare Chirnside started to impose and Morrison had a header cleared off the line.
Waverley were then awarded a penalty on the quarter hour mark when Shepherd went down after a challenge in the box. Lavery took the penalty but Todd made a good save down to his left.
Chirnside could have easily went into the lead after that but both Windram and Turner were denied by the keeper. United continued to push for the opener and it came when Morrison rose highest to meet Strachan’s corner from the right.
The goal gave the visitors confidence and Windram was only denied by a great block by the Waverley goalkeeper.
In the second half Chirnside created another opportunity when Strachan’s cut back was put just over the bar by Logie.
It looked as though United were going to hang on to victory but with 15 minutes to go disaster struck when Shepherd got to the by-line and his cross deflected in off Stobie for the equaliser.
Minutes later Waverley snatched the lead when Lavery shot home after a corner was only partially cleared.
Todd then had to make a good save late on for United.
