Coldstream 1, Berwick rangers Res 2: East of Scotland First Division leaders Coldstream lost their unbeaten home league record as they suffered only their second league defeat of the season against their local rivals.
Ankle injuries meant the Reserves were without centre backs Ewan Saunderson and Jonny Fairbairn who starred in the previous Saturday’s King Cup semi final win at Preston Athletic. One spot was filled by Dougie Brydon, recovering from injury, with an eye to his inclusion in the first team squad to face Rangers at Ibrox this weekend.
In the first minute, Coldstream’s Jonny Simpson flashed a shot across from the right which Reserves’ keeper Asher Tufail tipped on to the bar before it dropped behind his goal. There were more sighs amongst the home support when neither John Crawford nor Kieran Ainslie, in good positions, managed to connect with balls meant for their heads.
Home keeper Mark Walters fumbled a more efffective Brydon header for a corner. The Josh Morris-Greig Smith combination was shepherded by Coldstream’s close marking into moving the ball out to the left from where Keith Lough got in a cross but Morris’ back header ran wide leaving an even first 45 minutes scoreless.
After the restart, Lawrie Cannon saw his shot float over Berwick’s bar. When Cannon turned Allan Hay the wrong way and released the ball to Simpson, Dean Hoskins’ tackle stopped him pulling the trigger.
Having played into the sun in the first half, Rangers played behind a strengthening wind in the second and increasingly looked the more likely team. They went ahead on 69 minutes, Hay heading in a Dean Carse corner at the far post. The lead doubled 6 minutes later. Coldstream’s defence failed to cut out a low ball from Ross Brady leaving Lough to score with ease.
Home hopes were raised when Lee Lambert’s lob bounced down from the bar and Simpson nipped in for the kill but even six minutes of stoppage time was not enough for Coldstream to save a point.
