Coldstream boss Neil Oliver is hoping to bolster his squad by signing Italian midfielder Alessandro Zarrelli.

The 30-year-old is looking for a new club after starting a job in Edinburgh. But a regular commute from England means Coldstream could be the perfect club.

He trained at Home Park this week, but is also attracting interest from Spartans.

Zarrelli became ‘famous’ as the former confidence trickster who sent fake faxes to clubs in Wales and Northern Ireland during the 2004–05 season, posing as a make-believe football official who was offering a young player on a cultural exchange from the Italian FA.

Upon accepting the offer, the player they would receive instead would be Zarrelli. He was eventually exposed by the Sky TV show “Superfakes”.

But that was ten years ago. Zarrelli, who coaches youngsters at academy level, has built up plenty of experience at semi-pro level in the UK throughout his career.

He started this season at Sheppey United, and has also played for Lisburn Distillery, Queen’s Park, Irvine Meadow and Northwich Victoria.
