Heavy cup defeat for Eyemouth

Eyemouth United 3, Lothian Thistle HV 11

Eyemouth were taught a lesson in finishing when they faced higher league opposition in the shape of Lothian Thistle Hutchison Vale in the Image Printers East of Qualifying Cup match.

The Fishermen simply couldn’t get a foothold in the game.

The visitors dominated the midfield and for most of the afternoon the Eyemouth players were simply chasing shadows.

“They were a yard quicker than us throughout the 90 minutes,” said manager Carl Hudson.

“Our lads didn’t have an answer and it seems that every time they had a shot at goal they scored.”

The Eyemouth players were so disappointed at their performance that they even apologised to the committee and their supporters through Twitter on Saturday night.

“It was something they just have to put down to experience,” said Hudson. “They have to put it behind them, learn from it and move on.

“What I am hoping for now is that the players show some character when they take on Easthouses in the league this weekend, because that will be a measure of what they are made of.

“If they can come back from a performance like that and get a result I will be more than happy.”

Eyemouth hit the net three times during the course of the match, with Wilson, Phillips and Shennan all on the scoresheet.

But Lothian Thistle were the dominant force and the home side were not helped by the fact that they gave away a penalty and also scored two own goals.

At the start of the second half they also lost full-back Walker, but at that stage they were already 5-1 down and staring a heavy defeat in the face.

Vale went on to complete the rout by adding another six in the second half, and there can be no denying that the Eyemouth players were only too happy to hear the final whistle.

“We gave away a lot of possession,” said Hudson, “and hopefully that is something we can improve on for this weekend.”

Eyemouth: Mutch, Jess, Windram, Walker, Spiers, Phillips, Wilson, Bolton, Adamson, Lough, Shennan.
