Coldstream’s 13-game unbeaten run ends at Easthouses

Easthouses Lily 2, Coldstream1

Despite languishing at the foot of the First Division table, Easthouses Lily proved too tough a nut to crack at their Newbattle Complex on Saturday as Coldstream’s 13-match unbeaten league run ended following a very flat and lacklustre performance.

From kick-off it was clear that the Streamers were not themselves with their hosts registering four or five efforts at goal before the league leaders had even ventured into the opposition’s half. Lily should have gone ahead after just ten minutes, but their forward somehow missed from six yards. Their fullback then surged forward into a huge space before unleashing a long distance shot just past the post.

Further half chances came before a fantastic strike broke the deadlock, the home side’s big target man smashing an unstoppable shot into the top corner.

The response was good from Coldstream and they went close through Heugh before Crawford managed to shrug off his marker cutting a pass back to J. Simpson who put his laces through the ball to draw his side level with a ferocious shot. Wales then went close with a header before J. Simpson blazed over after the Easthouses keeper saved well from S. Simpson’s header.

Despite these chances the Streamers looked susceptible to the counter attack and moments before the half-time whistle a defence splitting through ball found its way to the striker who fortunately missed the target to the frustration of his manager.

After the interval Coldstream looked stronger, but their crossing was proving very frustrating for the forwards with the balls into the box rarely beating the first man.

A silly freekick was then given away with the resulting set piece lofted high into the area before being flicked into the path of an unmarked Lily player who nodded his side back into the lead.

They could have extended their lead further had it not been for some poor finishing. Pressure ensued from the Borders side, but again nothing came to fruition. J. Simpson’s effort in the final few minutes summed up the day, his goal bound shot striking Crawford on the shoulder and deflecting over the crossbar for a goal kick.

Coldstream now have a Borders derby against Kelso Utd at Woodside Park to prepare for as they aim to bounce back from this disappointing result and get their promotion push back on track.
