Berwick Rangers were spot on at Airdrie’s Excelsior Stadium to beat Queen’s Park in the first round of the Petrofac Training Cup, winning 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out.

And it was goalkeeper Billy Bald who was the hero of the moment, saving the vital kick which took the Shielfield Park outfit through to the second round.

The teams had been tied at 1-1 after 90 minutes, and with no further goals in extra-time the tie went to penalties.

Both sides netted their first three, with Andy Russell, Scott Maxwell and Dean Hoskins netting for the visitors.

Queen’s missed their fourth kick, and with Scott Dalziel scoring, it was Berwick who progressed to the next round when Bald saved Paul Quinn’s effort.

Earlier in the game, Berwick striker Darren Lavery gave Rangers the perfect start, netting after just three minutes when his low shot from just inside the box found the net off the inside of a post.

Berwick then had the better of the play but failed to capitalise, and Queen’s Park equalised after 33 minutes when Ross McPherson netted with a close-range header.

In the second half McPherson had a great opportunity to win the game but he missed a sitter from only five yards out with just Bald to beat.

In extra-time Queen’s were reduced to ten men when Shaun Fraser was shown a second yellow card for diving in the box.

The home side were then unlucky when a shot struck the underside of the bar, bounced on the line and was caught by Bald, before Russell was unlucky when he struck the post at the other end with a shot from 15 yards.

The game then went to the lottery of penalties, but Berwick won through, the first team into the hat for the second round.
