Peterhead 3-0 Berwick Rangers

Berwick’s hopes of boosting their play-off aspirations were dashed when they were beaten by league leaders Peterhead at Balmoor.

Rangers had got themselves back in the play-off picture with a 5-0 home win over Montrose the previous week, and they travelled north in confident mood.

But the champions-elect, who are unbeaten at home this season, were not about to let the visitors steal their thunder.

Bryan Gilfillan gave them the lead with a header after 13 minutes and goals from leading scorer Rory McAllister and Jordan Brown in the second half completed the victory.

After an early shot by Dean Cowie, Peterhead took the lead when Gilfillan headed home from the edge of the six yard box following a cross by Graeme Sharp.

Berwick were then forced into making a substitution with Dean Hoskins replacing Michael Dunlop in the centre of defence after picking up an injury.

Darren Lavery pulled a shot wide as Rangers tried to force their way back into the match.

The visitors enjoyed their fair share of possession, but they could not find a way past the well-marshalled home defence.

In a half of few chances, it wasn’t until the two minutes before half-time that either keeper was tested.

McAllister had a shot from the right side of the area saved by Billy Bald, and then Berwick skipper Lee Currie shot high and wide to the left.

In the second half, Peterhead enjoyed more of the ball, but play centred around midfield as both teams tried to gain the upper hand.

Hoskins headed wide after an hour, but McAllister doubled Peterhead’s lead with a shot from the right side of the box after 67 minutes after being set up by Andy Rodgers.

Berwick continued to press and Lee Currie shot high and wide, whilst at the other end Cowie pulled a shot wide.

Peterhead completed the victory with a third after 90 minutes when Brown fired home from close ranger after taking a pass from Ryan McCann.

Other results meant Berwick dropped to seventh place in the table, but they remain four points off the final play-off place, with seven games remaining.
