Berwick ‘legend’ Gary O’Connor has outlined his reasons for coming back to the club for a fourth spell.

O’Connor had three stints with the black and gold as a player, now he has returned as their goalkeeping coach.

“Basically it was all down to my friendship with ‘Yano,’ (manager Ian Little), he said.

“He asked if I would be interested in returning as goalkeeping coach after Ian McCaldon left, and after giving it some thought I decided to give it a go.

“Some people might think I have a love affair with Berwick - my wife certainly thinks that - but the truth is I have a strong affinity with the club,

“I had many happy years here as a player. The management and the fans were always good to me and it will be nice to give something back.”

O’Connor, who was a former Scotland U19 international, also had spells with Hearts, Doncaster and Cowdenbeath.

But it will always be his association with Berwick for which he will be best remembered.

“In some respects I think Berwick is a club who have under-achieved to a certain degree over the past few season.

“I think they are capable of playing in a higher division, and if I can play some small part in helping them achieve that, that would be great.”

O’Connor is currently going through his coaching badges, but he says it is too early to say what that may lead to in the future.

“I have a lot going on in my life at the moment,” he said, “what with work and my family.

“For the time being I am just happy to be back at Berwick and enjoying it.”
