It is with great sadness that Berwick Rangers heard of the passing of former player Ian Cashmore from Ayrshire this week.
Ian was only in his early 50’s and was with Berwick on loan from Ayr United in 1982/3, when he played 10 games netting eight goals before he was paralysed in a freak training accident with his parent club.
A special testimonial committee was set up between both clubs with the support of his family.
A number of events were staged, including a Talk-In at Berwick Holiday Centre with Kevin Keegan as the main guest, and a special Celtic v Sunderland game, which was played at Shielfield in front of 3000 fans.
The events raised tens of thousands of pounds and the money went towards a special bungalow and car.
Ian never lost his cheeky smile and sense of humour and not long after he and wife Cathy had a son, Ian Junior, who went on to play at Senior and Junior levels.
Sincere condolences go to all the family.
