PETERHEAD 1, BERWICK RANGERS 2: On-loan Hibs youngster Danny Handling scored twice on his debut as Berwick Rangers picked up a much-needed three points at Balmoor to move up to sixth in the Third Division table. Jordon Forster was sent off late on, but Rangers held on.
News of Handling’s arrival on loan from Easter Road until the end of the season only emerged on Friday, but the promising 17-year-old striker was handed a starting place by Berwick manager Ian Little, who has off-loaded top scorer Darren Gribben to junior outfit Bo’ness United on loan.
Goalkeeper Youssef Bejaoui, recruited on a one-month loan deal from Cowdenbeath the previous week, was also handed his first start.
Handling demonstrated his threat in front of goal with an early effort saved by the Peterhead goalkeeper, but his first goal arrived midway through the first half. Controlling Lee Currie’s cross from the right, Handling showed composure to fire past Paul Jarvie from 12 yards.
Peterhead equalised from the penalty spot after 49 minutes after the referee penalised Ross Gray for bringing down David Donald. Rory McAllister converted from the spot.
But Handling put Berwick back in front just seven minutes later when he collected a Steven Notman pass and curled his shot into the net from 20 yards.
Berwick were reduced to ten men in the 58th minute when Jordon Forster was sent off for deliberate handball, handing Peterhead the initiative.
Russell Duncan hit the crossbar and McAllister struck the post, but Berwick dug deep to claim all three points.
