Waiting for Video...

THE match between Rangers and Berwick Rangers at Ibrox rekindles memories of Dave Smith, who played for both sides. He guided Berwick to the Second Division championship in 1979.

Our photographers have dug out pictures from the tail end of season 1978/79 when Smith, who was Berwick’s player manager, guided the Black and Gold to the title.

Look out for lots of shots of the Berwick supporters celebrating.

Smith started his playing career for Aberdeen and moved to Rangers in the summer of 1966.

During his time at Ibrox, he made 303 appearances winning the Scottish League Cup in 1971, the Scottish Cup in 1973 and, most the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in 1972.

He left Ibrox in November 1974 to become player coach at Arbroath, and then became player-manager at Berwick in 1976.

He transformed the Shielfield Park club’s fortunes, guiding them to the Scottish Second Division championship in 1979.

He left Berwick in 1980 and subsequently managed Huntly, Gala Fairydean and Whitehill Welfare.
